10 Years collects together tracks spanning the career of Banco De Gaias Toby Marks, taking in releases from his beginnings on Michael Dogs Planet Dog label through to tracks released on his own Disco Gecko imprint. The album is a collection of his works so far; nineteen records culled from the six artist albums hes put out--an impressive achievement in itself in the ephemeral-disposable world of DJ culture. There are many classic and instantly recognisable tracks here, and listening to them all in one run serves the purpose of reminding us what an adequate and often thrilling producer Marks is. In a dance scene saturated with techno-ambient producers, not many of them can match his way of combining seemingly disparate elements of sound--ambient, prog rock, dub, electronic--into a fibrous but cohesive and atmospheric whole. The layers of sound and deep, emotive textures just keep on coming, as tracks like Last Train To Lhasa, Obsidian, Kincajou, Drunk As A Monk, Desert Wind, Sinhala, Touching The Void and Celestine engage the mind and fuel the feet, and reveal one of the electronic scenes most talented and independently minded individuals.
