Details

This is OOODs 3rd album. OOOD have been going since 1994 and are known worldwide as one of the originators of what is today called psy-trance. In 1996 they released one of Flying Rhinos biggest-selling 12s, the Fluorostani Transcendance EP, as part of the Unconscious Collective. Another goa classic of OOOD was the Kundalini EP on Psychic Deli. Free Range is a truly original psytrance album. The result of 6 years of work in the studio and onstage, this shows what can be produced when there is no release schedule pressure or creative compromise – in true Organic style. The band allowed each piece of the puzzle to evolve and morph into its own eclectic creation, all the while retaining and enhancing OOODs signature experimentation, storytelling and - most especially - humour. Working within the loose framework of creating unstoppable dancefloor tunes and with the aim of capturing the spirit of their live performances, no limits were placed on the style of music the band was writing. Work started on mixing the album in October 2005, the final result; a selection of main-room and alternative dancefloor tracks as broad in style as the diverse tastes and personalities of those involved, with a start-to-end flow that perfectly matches the mood evoked by the stunning cover. There is a gem of a bonus track written together with Ott (Twisted Records).Free Range bridges the often-mentioned and much-lamented gap between old-school goa trance where creativity and originality was prized above all else, and the more modern ethos of production quality over content, taking the best parts from both and making something new out of them. This is about as far from a production-line album as it is possible to get, and in a scene where every release is touted as unique, the next big thing this album really does stand out from the time you press play, its analog mastering adding an extraordinary depth and clarity. From beginning to end this record has been crafted not to please a scene apparently intent on devouring itself, but to satisfy the urge of four talented musicians, sound-engineers and DJs to make a lasting musical contribution - a thank-you to all those who have supported them over the last 12 years, and a statement of intent for the future.
