Sounds From The Ground a.k.a Nick Woolfson and Elliot Morgan Jones, emerged from the burgeoning, underground ambient dub scene of the early 90s. Their debut album Kin was a pioneering experiment in soulful, downtempo electronica and received widespread critical acclaim. Now, marking 15 years since the release of this ground-breaking work, Sounds From The Ground are to release a newly re-mastered version of Kin on Upstream Records.Nick Woolfson and Elliot Morgan Jones were both involved with label management and promoting underground parties in the early 90s, Woolfson in the house scene and Jones immersed in the psychedelic dub momentum which was growing in popularity. They were introduced by a mutual friend and Sounds From The Ground was born. The project soaked up their range of influences and soon began to deliver an experimental new soundBy the mid 90s as acts such as Portishead and Massive Attack began to come to prominence, Sounds From The Ground were also making waves. Melody Maker described Triangle as one of the first sexy ambient cuts, a phrase which can be transposed to describe both Kin, and the Sounds From The Ground signature sound, with its dub-infused electronic and pared down, soulful groovesAfter the initial launch in the UK, the duo shifted their focus to the US where Kin was signed to influential chillout label Waveform Records. The album became hugely popular in the US, particularly on the college campus music scene and paved the way for a successful, and ongoing, 15 year career encompassing 8 albums, high profile sync deals, regular appearances at The Big Chill and a global fanbase that continues to grow Kin remains a truly groundbreaking and influential collection of melodic, blissed out dub, hip hop, jazz and tripping beats with beautiful experimental rhythms set against an exquisitely layered sonic soundscape. From the introductory track, Gather through to the final track, Seven Sisters, Sounds From The Ground take you on a stunning aural journey, juxtaposing organic sounds with synthetic electronica and textured atmospherics. Despite rarely rising above 100bpm, Kin somehow maintains the ability to make you want to dance. The re-mastering process (undertaken by mastering legend Dave Blackman at Hilton Grove Mastering Studios) has delivered a version of Kin vastly superior to any previously available. This is a listening experience that utilises the latest in audio engineering technology but maintains the analog compression and EQs that deliver a deep warm sound. This sonic superiority has given a new lease of life to a classic album and has provided a listening experience that any electronic music fan should experience.Sounds From The Ground plan to re-master their other seminal albums, Mosaic and Luminal, before releasing an album of new material early next yearSounds From The Ground have become a hidden gem in the British contribution to the development of electronic music; respected and revered in the US, yet somehow, largely undiscovered in the UK, despite collaborations with artists such as Dillinger, Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones), B.J. Cole, Benjamin Zephaniah and more. The re-mastered Kin is a chance for the UK to embrace this talented duo and give them their rightful place in the annals of electronic music history.
